Wisconsin Family Ties Presents:
Misunderstood: Shifting From a Punitive Mindset
Wednesday, August 16th, 12:00 PM Central Time
Misunderstood kids are more likely to be restrained, secluded, suspended, expelled, and subjected to corporal punishment. While many acknowledge that behavior is communication, children are often punished in the name of behavior. In this session, we will discuss how a different lens on behavior can reduce and eliminate punitive practices.
Guest speaker for this session is Guy Stephens, national expert on the issue of restraint and seclusion, and founder/executive director of the Alliance Against Seclusion and Restraint (AASR), a nonprofit organization working to influence change in supporting children whose behaviors are often misunderstood. AASR’s mission is to inform changes in policy and practice, to reduce and eliminate the use of punitive discipline and outdated behavioral management approaches, and end the school-to-prison pipeline. The vision of AASR is safer schools for students, teachers, and staff.
Please join us and help change the lens through which we see children.

Wisconsin Family Ties Presents:
Appreciating Neurodiversity and Autistic Intelligence
Tuesday, September 26th, 12:00 PM Central Time
Join us to hear Doug and Joan Maynard share and discuss their appreciation for neurodiversity and autistic intelligence. Their lived experience of parenting a son with autism, and Doug’s academic expertise, offer a unique perspective. Increasing our appreciation for those who are neurodiverse and growing in our understanding of autistic intelligence can help each of us to foster a world that recognizes and emphasizes each person’s individual strengths and talents, while also providing support for their differences and needs.
Guest Speakers
Joan and Dr. Douglas Maynard
Doug Maynard, PhD, is the Maureen T. Hallinan Professor Emeritus of Sociology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and author of several books, including the co-authored book, (with Jason Turowetz) – Autistic Intelligence: Interaction, Individuality, and the Challenges of Diagnosis.
Joan Maynard is a retired Wisconsin Family Ties Information and Referral Coordinator (2002-2011). In her role, Joan talked with many parents across the state of Wisconsin with understanding and appreciation for the parenting journey. In her spare time, Joan likes to knit, cook, and watch Badger basketball and Brewer Baseball with Doug.
